This seemed weird to me at first, but it sort of makes sense when you realize:
* Google is not one unified entity: while the Gemini team might compete with Anthropic, they're basically just another (big) customer for the Cloud department
* Google(/Alphabet) has basically had a license to print money for decades (thanks to Google Ads), so it makes sense for them to "hedge their bets" with $10 billion (now, and potentially $30 billion more in the future) in case Gemini doesn't ultimately beat Claude.
