I used to use Vanilla OS on an older system. I remember it bogging down in part due to all the snaps and flatpaks.

I have the same experience, despite the vanilla in name the OS was shitting itself on older computer. I miss the ClearLinux from Intel that ran really smooth.

Bogging down? I've been on almost 100% Flapaks for years and have never noticed any adverse effects.

Vanilla OS is built on Debian sid, which follows a rolling release model rather than Fedora's point-release approach. We achieve immutability through our own ABRoot implementation, which directly leverages OCI container images under the hood, unlike OSTree. Vanilla OS is also reproducible, whereas Fedora requires you to place trust in its build infrastructure. Additionally, with Vib (Vanilla Image Builder), anyone can customize their own system image, or even create their own distro with minimal effort.

This sounds very intriguing! Been using Aurora (Universal Blue) for years, but there's always a package or two you need to layer. Updates have crapped out more than once because of these packages. Been thinking that an easier way of creating custom images is the solution.
uBlue images are not effortless to create and maintain. Just installed plain Fedora two days ago for this reason.
Vanilla being GNOME by default has kept me from trying it. Plasma is so darn good these days.

Totally agree with this sentiment.
Really cool project. I think it's nice that there's so many small, experimental distros out that are just trying stuff and seeing what works and what doesn't. If we (maybe through where freedestop is moving) can figure out a stable ABI, gui toolkit, application security / malware like behavior resistance (like what Ubuntu is trying with permission popups) and advanced desktop features integration story for software vendors on top of all of this, the direction the Linux Desktop is going in is looking bright.
